Mumbai, India (May 8, 2007) - Janssen-Cilag and Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development (J&JPRD) today celebrated the opening of an extended and renovated Analytical & Pharmaceutical Development Center (APDC), in Mumbai. At the same time, the companies broke ground for a future pharmaceutical research building on the same site. Analytical & Pharmaceutical Development Center

In line with plans to expand its overall presence in the Asia-Pacific region, J&JPRD committed to this investment to extend and renovate the APDC. The APDC will provide a world-class environment for research scientists, and will be its hub for analytical and pharmaceutical formulation development processes, increasing the company's overall capacity to discover and develop new pharmaceuticals. These processes play an important role in the introduction of new medicines for the global marketplace, since they ensure the quality of the new compounds. It is in this phase of a drug's lifecycle that scientist also decide on the form in which the medicine can best be produced and packaged.

In two phases, over two years, the existing building has been entirely renovated, and is now equipped with new, state-of-the art equipment, occupying 3,300 square meters.

"This is a significant step forward in our plans to expand our presence and capacity in India, as both an employer of highly skilled researchers and as a producer of life-saving medicines," said Ajit Shetty, World Wide Vice President, Operations.

A Strong Team

J&JPRD presently employs 65 people. Its range of research activities includes early developmental studies as well as development of drug formulations for global products.

"We are pleased to expand our footprint here in Mumbai, which is part of our overall strategy to perform high-level R&D in the Asia Pacific region while simultaneously increasing our capacity to produce world-class medicines," said Paul Stoffels, M.D., Company Group Chairman, Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Johnson & Johnson.

New Pharmaceutical Development Building

The groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on the future J&JPRD Pharmaceutical Development building. Upon its completion, expected by the end of 2008, this new building will occupy 2,400 square meters, and will be one of the most modern facilities of its kind and will also contribute to further expanding the company's strategic presence in this region.
